A 48-year-old member asked:
what are symptoms of stage four cancer?
1 doctor answer • 2 doctors weighed in

Dr. Ed Friedlander answered
Pathology 44 years experience
Depends: Each common cancer has a staging system depending on how far it has spread, and in turn, the symptoms depend on exactly where the tumor has spread and what it's doing. There's no telling. A stage IV lung cancer in the liver will behave much differently than a stage IV lung cancer in the chest wall.

Either by some symptom (something unusual you feel or notice about yourself - i.e. Pain) or sign (something your doctor notices during an evaluation - i.e. Tenderness on exam) or through a screening test. We currently have approved screeing tests for cervical, breast, colon/rectal, and prostate cancers.

Malignant: By definition, malignant tumors are cancerous. A tumor is just an abnormal swelling - many times it is benign (no serious, imminent concern). But if it is found to contain cancerous cells, it is then malignant.

Several: Lung cancer. Oropharyngeal cancer. Even cervical cancer is increased in smokers. But not smoking or drinking is not protective. This just reduces your risk.
