Infection: Ludwig's angina is a strangling sensation caused by swelling of the floor of the mouth, the tongue, and the pharynx (upper throat). It can be life-threatening by preventing the patient from breathing. It is treated with antibiotics and may require extensive surgery to drain the infection. A tracheostomy may be needed to allow the patient to breathe.
