Go see your doc!: Congratulations on thinking ahead! preconception counseling is something that family physicians enjoy discussing w/their patients, so chat w/yours. Also, make an appointment w/obstetrician, perhaps even maternal-fetal specialist, who you would like to assist in your pregnancy since epilepsy does increase your risk. These docs can discuss your proposed care. Don't forget to see neurologist, too!

Take meds regularly: Avoid any known triggers of your seizures. Make sure to have your medication blood levels regularly as the level will change during the pregnancy and you do not want to let it get too low. It may require an increase in dose. After delivery, you may need to adjust the dose downward. speak with your neurologist about anti seizure medications with least potential fetal effects.
