Start meds prompty: For women who do not want hormonal contraception, i advise starting a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent (ibuprofen, naproxen) at the first hint of menstrual cramps. If your periods are regular and you can predict when you are going to sart, you might find it helpful to start the medication the day prior to your expected period. The take it around the clock for 2-3 days.

Try Lysteda: Lysteda is a new medication designed to decrease heavy periods. Although not primarily designed for cramping many find relief when the heavy bleeding stops. Another option is to suppress your period completely by taking birth control continuously without the placebo pills. No period = no cramping. Discuss w your doctor.
