What does it mean if the area around a cut is turning purple? does that just mean it's bruised?

Yes.: Bruises are injuries where blood has leaked out of a blood vessel and into the surrounding tissues. Initially, it looks purple because hemoglobin without oxygen is that color. As the blood breaks down, you get the green and yellow colors.
