Yes, very common: This happens all the time: first symptoms months or even years after catching the infection. However, there are signs that almost always indicate newly acquired infection. If the person has multiple sores, lots of pain, lymph node swelling and pain (in the neck for oral herpes, groin for genital), fever, and so on, then almost certainly the infection was acquired in the previous few days.
