A Residency: 4 years college, then another 4 years of dental school to become a dentist. Dentists are trained in all phases of dentistry, including providing care for children. A pediatric dental specialist has an additional 2-4 years (2, 000 to 4, 000 hours) of training in dental care for children, and is trained to do it better. It's similar to the difference between a general physician and a pediatrician.

It deals with dental work toward the maintenance of baby teeth until they are naturally lost. Dentistry tends to be focused primarily on adult human teeth, though it is not limited strictly to this.

Specialty: A pediatric dentist, also known as a pedodontist, has completed additional training to treat specifically the dental needs of children involving primary teeth and the transition to the adult dentition. Age of patient: A pediatric dentist specializes in making the littlest people in your family feel safe and comfortable while giving them dental care. It sometimes seems like the teeth are just littler and everyone should be able to help, but in reality, the treatment is much different for the smaller kids. Being a dentist myself, i still take my kids to a pediatric dentist for care.

Big Difference: Pediatric dentistry is performed by specially trained dentists who only treat children. Kids have specific dental needs that are different from those of adults. Kids can also be quite challenging to keep comfortable and safe, so special training, materials, and techniques are needed. While a general dentist can treat the vast majority of kids very well, special circumstances require a specialist.

Training: The pediatric dentist has an extra two to three years of specialized training after dental school, and is dedicated to the oral health of children from infancy through the teenage years. The very young, pre-teens, and teenagers all need different approaches in dealing with their behavior, guiding their dental growth and development, and helping them avoid future dental problems.

Kids vs. adults: A pedodontist is the pediatrician of dentistry. They usually see kids til about 18 years old. Then on to the big peoples dentist. Most dentists do treat kids and adults (like me) bua pedodontist is strictly limited to kids. Although I'm sure an ocassional adult may be seen but very rarely. A pediatric dentist is a general dentist who received extra training in dealing with kids.
