Various causes.: Palpitations usually refers to the sensation of the heart's rapid beating or premature beats (often felt as "skipped beats"). The assessment of this complaint should entail the taking of a careful history, including dizziness or fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, etc. Next, a careful physical exam, an ekg and perhaps chest x-ray and holter test will help determine the underlying cause.
