See below.: Renal function typically estimated by measuring creatinine levels and calculating estimated glomerular filtration rate. Normal egfr is age dependent, but generally > 100ml/min is normal. Egfr < 15ml/min defines stage v kidney disease which is when serious potassium problems are seen. This equates to about 1/16 of normal kidney function. There are generally nonspecific signs along the way.
