Fever and Cough: Fever and cough are common with any viral respiratory infection. If symptoms persist longer than about 10 days, a secondary bacterial infection may be brewing. Taking tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin will help lower the fever. Most over the counter cough medicines contain Guaifenesin and / or dextromethorphan. If you also have muscle aches, sore throat, and extreme, sudden malaise, you may have the flu.
