What is it like getting your cavities filled?

Painless: If fillings are very small and not deep sometimes no anesthesia is needed to fill a tooth and if it is deep there are techniques that make the procedure painfree.

A simple procedure: While you shouldn't try to do it at home, dental fillings can be simple and almost painless. The short version: take out the decayed, broken and infected part of the tooth; then disinfect, insulate and fill it up with something durable that looks great. Your dentist can provide as much or as little "geek speak" as you want on this subject as it relates to your teeth ;-).

Easy: It is a very easy procedure where the dentist depending on the depth of the decayed area will need to anesthetize the tooth , then with a handpiece will clean the tooth of all decay and filled it with a material that will give back form, shape, strength and support to the tooth.

Not so bad!: Modern dentist should be able to treat tooth decay (cavities) very comfortably. The patient is generally given a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and keep the patient very comfortable. Ask your dentist what he or she uses to keep you comfortable during the procedure. It is also nice if you can listen to music (headphones) while the dentist works. Sedation is an option if you are anxious!
