Ortho eval needed: If your pain and swelling do not resolve within days, or if you feel unstable as though your knee may buckle or give out, you should seek a thorough knee examination by your physician or an orthopaedic surgeon. Xrays and even an MRI will potentially supplement an initial examination to clearly elucidate the nature and full degree of damage.

It depends: If the pain has not improved significantly within a few days, have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate care. Depending on the severity of the injury, some treatment options may include rest, ice, compression and elevation, bracing, injection, pain medication, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, and possible arthroscopic or open surgery.
