Is surgery the only way to get rid of a chalazion?

No: A chalazion is a plugged up oil gland in the eye lid. Hot compresses for 10 minutes at a time , 3-4 times a day can help but takes weeks to work. If you, have a large chalazion then minor surgery done usually in the office is the best treatment.

No: Initial treatment should be warm compresses with massage, then an antibiotic/steroid ointment then a steroid injection can be implamented before a surgical excision.
