Shampoos never work: Head lice generally need to be poisoned and manually removed. Shampoos don't do much to deal with them, and suffocation techniques aren't terribly effective either. Permethrin containing medicines like rid and nix work pretty well, as do non-permethrin products like ovid and licemd. But nothing works better than that nit-loosening gel, that fine toothed comb, and lots of time and effort.
