Will Need Medication: Unfortunately, you need a medicinal shampoo to kill off the lice and their offspring. However, there are many over-the-counter products to choose from. The key is to get rid of the eggs and/or kill off the hatched offspring before they get a chance to reproduce. If any eggs survive (they are attached to the hair follicles), the cycle just begins all over again.

Limited benefit: I have had a few moms that tried vinegar as a ferquent hair wash (daily for a week or more) & say that this worked. Apple cider vinegar or its stouter cousin pickleing vinegar were effective in lossening the egg casings from hair to the point they slid off easily. Since they tried thiis after otc products i'm not sure which did what.

NOT FAST OR EASY: Natural remedies for lice include the application of olive oil, petroleum jelly, mineral oil or mayonnaise to the head/ hair. These oil-based products smother the louse.
