A member asked:

Does splenectomy prevent recurrent episodes of hemolysis?

For certain types...: Splenectomy may be the first choice of treatment in some types of hemolytic anemia, such as hereditary spherocytosis. In other cases, such as in autoimmune hemolytic anemia (aiha), splenectomy is recommended when other measures have failed. One should immunize against infections with encapsulated organisms before planned splenectomy if possible to help prevent infections.

Maybe: Splenectomy is indicated if hemolytic anemia is not responsive to other measures. It may stop hemolysis, but hemolysis can recur at a later time.
