Fracture vs bursitis: You may have fluid in the bursa in front of your knee cap, or you may have broken your knee cap. It sounds like you should see a doctor and have an x-ray to see if your knee cap or knee is broken.

Patella fracture?: Hard to say what you have but patella fracture, quad tendon rupture, and patella tendon rupture are all in the differential diagnosis. Bottom line....It should be checked asap.

Likely bursitis : With a direct contusion you can get a collection of blood in the bursa in front of the knee making it squishy, but the pain your experiencing is troubling and does warrant an x-ray to be sure there is no fracture. Be careful walking with it until you are seen as you may cause yourself more damage and require surgery.

Bursitis or fracture: Sometimes when you hit the front of your knee very hard, you can get a bursitis (a swelling between the skin and the bone). The other option is that you might have a broken kneecap (also named patella). You should get an x-ray.

Get it checked: While it might be as simple as a bursa, you should be concerned about a patella fracture, quad tear or patellar tendon tear....All which need surgery.
