What are the drawbacks and benefits of breast augmentation?

16 doctors weighed in across 8 answers

Benefits are likely: The benefits of breast augmentation are greater self esteem, confidence, and happiness with self appearance. The drawbacks are risk of complications that may lead to a revision surgery. Unfortunately the national average for that risk is high, 20% in three years. However, qualified surgeons that utilize dimensional-based planning have a much lower risk, about 3%. Check credentials for asaps.

It's a long list: The list of benefits in having breast augmentation can be very long. The best comparison is that like marriage having healthy looking and proportional breasts can make a woman feel fulfilled. Complications in breast surgery have been traditionally too high, but with the use of tuba surgery and fat transfer these complications are far and few in between. Good luck from nyc.

Positive vs Negative: There are many potential negatives but the positives outweigh the negatives and include: infection, hematoma, wound breakdown, asymmetry, implant exposure/extrusion/rupture overcorrection/undercorrection, contour irregularity, capsular contracture, distortion with muscular contraction, interference with oncologic evaluation of the breast, interference with nipple sensation, nursing or aging, etc.

Consultation Key.: Breast augmentation surgery is generally a very safe procedure as long as some guidelines are followed. Seek consultation with board-certified plastic surgeons who can demonstrate excellent safety history/record. Anesthesiology and surgery facility should also be considered. Both saline and silicone breast implants are “safe” but each have pros/cons associated with their use. Consultation helpful.
