See below.: Autistic children have problems w/ social interactions (do not emotionally connect or form relationships w/ others), may have communication deficits such as delayed speech, and often engage in repetitive behavior (hand flapping, repeatedly banging toys). Symptoms present before age 3. 70% of children with autism also suffer from mental retardation (iq below 70).

Symptoms vary with: age. Earliest signs are deficits in reciprocal social interactions & social communication. Stereotypical, repetitive, non-functional movements are displayed early in some toddlers, but may be hard to spot. Narrow, restricted areas of interest are often evident by age 3. For assessment call San Andreas Early Start at 800-404-5900 for ages birth-3, or school district, http://www.pausd.org, for 3-5.
