Complex issue: Epilepsy is a clinical condition of the risk for seizures. Some are born with this condition, some acquire it following brain injury, others develop it due to congenital or genetic or metabolic disorders. Some cause the condition due to alcohol and drug use. Elderly patients develop epilepsy due to changes to the brain over time including strokes, diabetes, injuries, degenerative disease.

Many ways: Genetics is one way. Some even believe that even in the "non-genetic epilepsies, " that there is a "genetic predisposition" that makes some people more susceptible to developing epilepsy from head trauma, stroke, dementia, encephalitis, or brain tumors.
