Not inherited: Merkel cell carcinoma, a neuroendocrine tumor of the skin, is not inherited. The majority of these tumors in fact seem to be associated with a virus (merkel cell polyomavirus).
Dr. Mark Kuhnke

PROBABLY NOT: There is no data suggesting the mcc runs in families. Actually, if there were multiple members of a single family with the disease, it would be reportable. It is a very rare cancer, occurring in the epidermis in sun-exposed areas of the body.

Could my keloid be really a merkel cell carcinoma?

How to find out: Merkel cell cancers aren't super-hard like keloids and probably won't have the little crab-claw serrations at the edge. Since you had to ask, get two physician opinions. I've seen these nasty cancers undercalled. Best wishes.

this diagnosis is rarely made clinically. Usually a doctor thinks it is something else and only finds out what it is when a biopsy is done

Exactly. I have never seen or heard of a case in which it was the principal working diagnosis prior to excision.
