What are the risks to getting a flue shot?

Usually no problems: One who gets a flu shot usually has no noticeable reaction. Some will have 1-2 days of mild soreness at the shot site. Mild fever may occur in young children but usually not beyond that age. The shot is not a "live virus", so it cannot give a person the flu. Rarely, one can faint due to getting poked by a needle, the shot site has a big, swollen reaction, or one has a serious allergic reaction.

Minor, tolerable: Typically the most common side effect of a flu shot is a bit of soreness that lasts a day or two. Oftentimes it is mild enough that medication does not need to be given. If necessary, Ibuprofen or an ice pack can help the soreness or any mild swelling. Children with egg allergies may or may not be able to have the flu vaccine so consult your pediatrician or allergist first.
