A day before period: Conception occurs within day or so of the sex. It takes about 3 weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG for a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period. If the result is negative repeat the test in 4-5 days. Use first morning urine and follow instructions for the test carefully.

Early pregnancy: Answer actually depends on the individual's cycle length. In short...Anything is possible. But in reality, if your cycle length is about 28 days, then most home pregnancy tests are unable to reliably detect a pregnancy until approximately a few days leading up to menses. It depends on the sensitivity of the test that was used and the person reading the results. See your doctor. Lab work may help.
