GERD symptoms: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is caused by dysfunction of a valve opening to the stomach from esophagus. When swallowing, the valve opens briefly to allow food to pass. It fails to close tightly to prevent acid from splashing back (reflux) damaging the esophagus. Symptoms: belching, throat-clearing, heartburn, sour taste, bad breath. Treatment includes lifestyle changes and often medication.
