12-18 g/dL: In men, normal hemoglobin concentration is 14-18 g/dl. In women, it is 12-16 g/dl because some is lost during normal menstrual blood flow. Most clinicians consider 11 g/dl to be anemic, while a HGB less than 7 g/dl is an indication for a transfusion.
