It is unlikely: Rapid strep tests are not relyable in the first 24 hours of infection. However, the coughing makes me think this was not strep pharyngitis. It was more likley a viral upper respiratory tract infection. However, if you have questions see your pediatrician before the end of the week.

Doubtful: There are times that the rapid strep test is negative but a formal culture is positive but you don't say anything about a sore throat or if it was red. This is most likely a viral illness with five days of fever that resolved. The cough is often the last symptom to leave and make take another week to ten days to clear. As long as he is acting and feeling well i would not be concerned.
