Finding the germs: Whooping cough can be diagnosed by finding the germ in the body and/or by measuring body's response to the germ. However, those tests may only useful for certain times after the infection starts, so they may not help. There is not a specific test for bronchitis, although when someone is coughing up mucus for a long time, testing it in the lab to see what germs are there can help guide treatment.
