Cells vs. Pigment: A mole, or a nevus, is a collection of melanocytes (cells that produce pigment) these cells can rarely turn cancerous. Moles can be flat or raised, dark or light. Have your moles evaluated. A birthmark can be made of melanocytes, vascular cells (blood vessel origin), or other cells types. These rarely turn cancerous. A sunspot (lentigo) is pigment from sun exposure, but can turn bad as well.
