A member asked:

Is it safe for chiari patients to get lumbar punctures?

Depends: The arnold chiari malformation is where the hole at the base of the skull is too large and part of the brain slide down into the spine. As with most things, there is a variation in severity, with many (perhaps most) patients totally unaware they have a problem. In many cases an LP can be safely performed. As with anything, make sure your doc is aware of your full medical history.

Depends: The degree of compromise to foramen magnum needs to be adequately evaluated. This requires MRI rather than ct. Probably better to take minimum amount of fluid as possible and monitor closely afterward. Lp can be done safely but risks are increased in the presence of significant chiari malformation.
