Motor neurons: Polio is a disease caused by a specific virus that attacks specific types of nerve cells. No one understands why it is so selective. It can affect motor neurons on just one leg or the entire spine or even the diaphram affecting breathing. The disease causes a form of meningitis with fever and severe illness, but involved limbs remain weak and do not grow in normal manner.
