Depends: Prognosis will depend on several factors- including how many blood counts are involved , percentage of the marrow blast, the biology of the mds- etc. If all blood counts are low, and if the blast number is higher and if the biology of the mds is complex- the risk for transforming to leukemia will be higher and the survival will be shorter. Please discuss with hematologist/oncologist.

MDS: Mds if low grade can go for a long time just causing low counts, but if it is high grade than there is a higher risk for leukemic transformation. Nowadays the fish panel done for mds also helps in the prognostication.

Myelodysplasia (MDS): is similar to acute leukemia because both are caused by genetic mutations that accumulate in our bone marrow stem cells over time, and both cause a block to normal bone marrow cell development. MDS can further evolve into an acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and is likely to do so if a bone marrow biopsy has increased numbers of immature "blast" cells or if certain genetic alterations are present.
