Lay definition: A pneumonia is an infection of the lung tissue; the lay term "silent" is used to define pneumonias where there is no cough. Iv antibiotics are usually reserved for people with pneumonias caused by drug resistant bacteria or in people with multiple drug allergies for whom it would be difficult to find an oral drug. Home infusions are always preferable to hospitalization if you can swing it.
