Symptoms: See your doctor for an examination. Do you have upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, pains after eating, abdominal bloating and gas? Do you have gallstones on ultrasound? If you have these, then surgery may be helpful for you.

Sickness maybe: In the worst scenario, one could get quite ill or infection develop if there is gallbladder blockage from gallstones that is not treated with surgery. Otherwise some of the symptoms can be treated with medications as surgery is usually not needed as an emergency for gallstones.

Trial and error diet: While many patients have no GI symptoms after cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), some patients may note changes in bowel habits with more frequent stools and irritation. Some patients may have alterations in dietary tolerance, which may change over time. This cannot be predicted prior to cholecystectomy and trial and error of diet is normal.
