Is the ovulation day when you really conceive? & does a egg have to be present in order to pregnant?

Sort-of and yes: An egg (oocyte) must absolutely be present and mature for conception. An oocyte is able to be fertilized for somewhere between 10-up-to-maybe-24 hours after ovulation, so if fertilization happens it must be 'on the day' of ovulation.
