Concern: Bleeding early in pregnancy is not normal, but it is not unusual either. Many women will have some light bleeding or spotting in the first trimester and go on to have normal uncomplicated pregnancies. Miscarriage is a risk-- you should let your doctor know and have an ultrasound and possibly some blood work. If you are rh neg, you should get a Rhogam shot.

Needs evaluation: About 50% of pregnant women will experience bleeding in the first trimester. It is important that this be evaluated promptly. In some cases all is normal. In others this represents a miscarriage. The most dangerous thing though is an ectopic pregnancy. This is when someone is pregnant outside the uterus in the fallopian tube. It requires prompt treatment.
