Gout rx: Colchicine is used to treat several inflammatory conditions. It is known best as a treatment for acute gout and prophylaxis for gout attacks. It is also used to treat less common conditions such as familial mediterranean fever, skin vasculitis, and chronic pericarditis.

Effective but watch: Colchicine is a very effective medication for gout and several other disorders. It affects cell membranes. More importantly it has a very narrow efficacy/toxicity index, meaning that the dose has to be very carefully watched and it must be kept out of reach of children, as even one pill is dangerous to an infant.
