Longer the better: Rest, ice, elevation when lying down and scrotal support is important to keep the scrotum from getting swollen. 2 weeks at a minimum, but 4 weeks would be even better. If the scrotum gets swollen it can take a long time for the hydrocele to feel better (like months) so pay your dues early.

2 weeks or so: It really depends on your activity level and the anatomy at the time of surgery. Ask you surgeon for specifics but using a scrotal support (jock strap or compression shorts) is typically recommended for at least 2 weeks.
