Why does codeine make me itch? i have been taking it in a cough syrup for about one week and it is getting worse .

Listed side effect: Rash/itching is listed side effects. In some people, Codeine can cause the release of a substance called histamine in your body, thus causing the itching (hence antihistamine such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) helps the itch). If it is getting worse, you should stop it and take some benadryl (diphenhydramine). Reconsult doc for treatment of your cough. Avoid Codeine products in the future. Good luck.
