Low 'fighters': With dmd and its subsets, there are some cases with affected white cell lines and the immunoglob as well. Add to this problem of poor muscles power having inability to cough up pooled secretions that get infected with micro-organisms very easily.. 'respiratory infections'.
Dr. William Singer
Pediatric Neurology 51 years experience
Weak respirations: As Duchennes muscular dystrophy progresses, the muscles of respiration become weakened. As a result the person does not have the forceful breathing and cough to clear secretions from the respiratory tract. As soon as a cold begins you should give vigorous chest physical therapy to mobilize the secretions and if necessary suction them.

Do colds lead to ear infections in children?

Dr. Lisa Roberts
Pediatrics 23 years experience
Yes: Colds tend to precede the onset of an ear infection in children. This is because a cold causes fluid to develop in the middle ear, that at times may get infected by bacteria or viruses. Ways to decrease your baby's risk of ear infections are: 1) avoid smoke exposure, 2) try to limit pacifier use in those prone to ear infections, and 3) avoid having your baby drink milk laying down flat.

Impaired muscles: When dmd affects the muscles of breathing, patients have difficulty clearing secretions which can lead to increased infections. Chest pt can be useful to break the secretions up and allow them to be cleared. If there is an issue with scoliosis, this should be addressed early to prevent further repiratory compromise later in the disease course.
