Tryptophan : Tryptophan is an amino acid. It is the precursor to the production of serotonin. The GI system will convert tryptophan to 5 hydroxytrptophan to cross the blood brain barrier and then convert the 5htp into serotonin. It does many other things in the body, but this is what it is most known for.
