Prevents Contaminati: It is a piece of rubber with a small hole in it to let a tooth go thru it. This will seal off the tooth from the mouth. This will be used to keep the saliva away from the tooth and allow adhesive to work better. It will also keep the germs in your mouth away from the tooth and the disinfectant used out of your mouht when getting a root canal.

Rubber Dam: The "rubber dam" is actually a thin, square 6 x 6 latex, or non-latex (for those patients allergic to latex) shield, that is designed to be placed over a tooth/teeth as isloation during certain dental procedures; such as root canals and the placement of restorations. This shied not only prevents saliva contamination during procedures, but also prevents aspirating/swallowing foreign objects..
