Heart protein: Troponin is a protein found in heart muscle. If the heart is damaged due to heart attack or a handful of other conditions, troponin is released from the damaged muscle fibers into the blood stream. Measurement of the troponin level aids the physician in the evaluation of chest pain. If the troponin level is elevated, a cardiac problem is suspected.
