Heart protein: Troponin is a protein found in heart muscle. If the heart is damaged due to heart attack or a handful of other conditions, troponin is released from the damaged muscle fibers into the blood stream. Measurement of the troponin level aids the physician in the evaluation of chest pain. If the troponin level is elevated, a cardiac problem is suspected.

Heart muscle enzyme: Troponin is a heart enzyme that is released in the blood when the heart is under strain. Elevated levels of this enzyme in the setting of chest pain and ekg changes usually mean that an individual is having a blockage in the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart.
