Non-REM transition: Sleep talking usually occurs from transitory arousals from nrem sleep. The body does not move smoothly during transition from one phase of nrem sleep to another phase of nrem sleep. So, it occurs during partial arousals. Sleep talking may occur during rem sleep, when there is a motor breakthrough from sleep paralysis of rem sleep and u may talk loud while dreaming. This is a parasomnia.
