Transfer of bone: The transfer of bone from one site or source (donor) to a recipient site is known as a bone graft. The donor can be the patient them self or from a tissue bank. There are also synthetic graft material and xenograft material (from another species i.e. Bovine derived).

Increasing bone: In dentistry it is most commonly done by adding powdered or solid bone substitute to a deficient area and covering it for 4-6 mo. The body responds by healing the area into new solid bone. This procedure is done at sites in the mouth where there is not enough bone and there is a need for more bone to support a dental implant.
