Anemia: Usually not due to one heavy period. What happens usually is that you become anemic- due to the ongoing heavy menses / blood loss- that occurs in monthly basis- assuming that you have a monthly period.

Yes: A woman can lose a significant amount of blood during her period. This can occur overtime with multiple periods and can be exacerbated if the person becomes iron deficient during this time. People with bleeding disorders (von willebrand disease, for example) can also cause very heavy periods, as well as those diagnosed with dysfunctional uterine bleeding.
