Long time: As an infection is allowed to progress, there will be more redness, heat, pain, swelling, and eventually drainage. You may more immediately have your problem taken care of by going to your pcp, having the area numbed, lance and drain the boil, and start on oral antibiotics. You have suffered enough with conservative care -- it's probably time to go on to more definitive treatment.
