Please clarify: Gallstones do not form or go to the liver. The best test to check for gallstones in the gallbladder is an ultrasound. The best test to check for gallstones in the bile duct is an MRI of the bile duct (mrcp); alternatively, a GI doctor can access the bile duct thru the mouth by endoscopy (ercp); if a bile duct stone is present, (s)he can remove it at the same time.

Depends: It is unlikely but possible to have stones in bile duct within liver itself. Most patients make stones in gallbladder, some in bile duct outside of liver and very few inside the liver. Need ultrasound or MRI to look for stones if labs r abnormal or symptoms.
