How come the sebum production can be reduced by accutane without treating its cause , the hormones? can you please explain the mechanism?

Not understood: The multiple effects of Isotretinoin are not completely understood. Particularly how it stops oil production or thickening of keratin. It also has an antiinflammatory effect. Only very specific forms of acne respond to isotretinoin. It is in the retinoid family which includes vit a & can very dangerous to fetus developing brain. Can cause severe depression. How this happens is not understood.

Cells: Accutane reduces the proliferation of cells that make sebum, while the hormones stimulate the cells that are there to make more (or less) sebum.

Accutane: Accutane is 13 cis retinoic acid. . When we eat vitamin a it is fat soluble and is stored int he liver. When the body needs vitamin a the storage form is converted in to 13 cis retinoic acid, which is water soluble and is eliminated from the body quickly. One of it's actions is to affect the formation of the sebaceous glands, minimizing their size and oil production.
