1) If your relatives: With autism have a heritable genetic syndrome (e.g., fragile x ) or a copy repeat error on microarray known to cause autism 2) "advanced maternal age" (35 & >, ) increases risk of Down syndrome & other chromosomal abnormalities 3) "advanced paternal age, " increases risk of new mutations & autism. Babies born by ivf have a higher incidence of autism than those conceived without assistance.

Genetics and autism: There are great advances in the genetics of autism spectrum disorders, but they are not good enough to predict based on genetic testing. A normal genetic test cannot rule out autism, and finding a genetic difference, even if it is associated with the autism spectrum, does not mean it is inevitable. If you want a baby, have a baby. Autism does not mean awful. It can be great.
