Ovarian cyst: When an ovarian cyst ruptures, some blood is released into the pelvis which will cause pelvic pain. Most of the time only pain medications are needed, since the majority of cysts are self-limited. However in rare cases, the ruptured cyst can continue to bleed, and be life-threatening. Imaging (ultrasound) in an er and lab work are helpful. And rule out more serious causes such as ectopic preg.

Ruptured cyst: Ruptured cysts will often cause acute lower abdominal pain. Rarely if they rupture they can cause bleeding. This is really the only time when a ruptured cyst is dangerous. Even if it bleeds it usually stops on its own also.
